This Clinical Assistant role willsupport the manager's strategic directions for Central Specimen Reception and act in the role as required while supervising the team on the day-to-day operations.
Key competencies of the role:
- Experience in pre-analytical processes, e.g. sorting, coding, data entry, aliquoting, parcel management, troubleshooting etc, in a large and complex specimen reception unit.
- Proven ability to solve problems and show initiative in the workplace.
- Better than average knowledge of a broad range of industry related computer-based software including Microsoft Office applications.
- Experience dealing with a variety of people and a high level of awareness of the impact the individual has on the overall customer experience.
- High level leadership skills and a demonstrated willingness to succeed and supervise cohesively with all-team members.
- Sound understanding of laboratory quality systems and the requirements of NATA accreditation and ISO certification

- A requirement of this role will be to participate across a 24-hour shift roster from time to time depending on operational needs.
Qualifications, registration and other requirements:
- Nil mandatory qualifications are required for this role. The ability to gain the following is desirable Certificate III Pathology (or similar), Certificate IV Laboratory Techniques and successful completion of Train the Trainer.
- The Cairns Laboratory delivers a 24 hour, 7-day service. In this workplace, all newly appointed Specimen Reception staff will be required to work all shifts which may include overnight. This facilitates the progressive review of staffing and shift arrangements in the Core Laboratory to accommodate changes in workload and service requirements.
- Current Dangerous Goods Certification or the ability to acquire.
- It is a condition of employment for this role for the employee to be, and remain, vaccinated against COVID-19 (Health Employment Directive No. 12/21(PDF) ( https://www.health.qld.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0022/1108453/hed-1221.pdf ) and Queensland Health Human Resources Policy B70(PDF) ( https://www.health.qld.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0024/1108446/qh-pol-486.pdf ).
- It will be a condition of employment for this role for the employee to be, and remain, vaccinated against one or more of the following vaccine preventable diseases during their employment: Hepatitis A & B, Measles, Mumps, Pertussis, Rubella and Varicella.
- Additional vaccinations including Japanese Encephalitis and Rabies may also be required for this position.
