About Pathology Queensland

Pathology Queensland (PQ) provides diagnostic pathology services to all Hospital and Health Services (HHS) across metro, regional and remote Queensland, offering laboratory services in the disciplines of: anatomical pathology, chemical pathology, haematology, immunology, microbiology and genomics. PQ also provides an invaluable service to Queenslanders by supporting a coordinated response to incidents and disasters.

Pathology Queensland:

  • has laboratories located within 35 Queensland Health hospital facilities, providing 24/7 service every day of the year
  • employs approximately 2000 staff including specialist pathologists, registrars, scientists, technicians, laboratory assistants, and operational and support staff, across Queensland
  • supports more than 450 point-of-care testing devices, extending access to pathology results in remote locations and after hours with testing at the patient's bedside
  • is involved with 70 per cent of all medical decisions and in all cancer diagnoses
  • is critical to the delivery of positive patient outcomes and plays a key role in delivering on Queensland Health's commitment to achieve good health and well-being for all Queenslanders
  • works alongside clinicians to better understand diseases, enable earlier diagnosis, inform treatment options and monitor disease progression
  • provides specialised testing services for samples referred from public and private pathology providers within Queensland and from interstate.

What we are looking for:

  • Experience in the performance of Haematology, Coagulation and/or Chemistry investigations.
  • Theoretical knowledge and understanding of Haematology, Coagulation and Chemistry principles and procedures
  • Proven ability to work independently, solve problems and show initiative in the workplace.
  • Well-developed communication skills and ability to work in a team environment.
  • Understanding of laboratory quality systems and the requirements of NATA accreditation and ISO certification.
  • Awareness of the human resource management policies applicable to contemporary workplaces.
  • The successful applicant will be expected to participate in the multi-scientist shift roster and will be required to work a combination of day and afternoon shifts within each fortnight.

Mandatory qualifications and other requirements:

  • Minimum qualification for Health Practitioner Level 3 (HP3):
    • Minimum qualification for Health Practitioner Level 3 (HP3 Clinical):
      • The successful applicant must hold a relevant degree in science or equivalent from a recognised University or other tertiary institution.
  • Appointment to this position requires proof of qualification and/or registration with the appropriate registration authority, including any necessary endorsements, to be provided to the employing service prior to the commencement of service. Overseas applicants are reminded that assessment of equivalence of qualifications is required.
  • The Central Core Laboratory delivers a 24-hour, 7-day service. All newly appointed Core Laboratory staff are engaged with the understanding that they may be required to work any rostered shift within the 24-hour 7-day roster period, including overtime as required. This facilitates the progressive review of staffing and shift arrangements in the Core Laboratory to accommodate changes in workload and service requirements.
  • It is a condition of employment for this role, for the employee to be, and remain, vaccinated against COVID-19 as per the Queensland Health Human Resources Policy B70.
