Job Details

Provide results and scientific advice to the Sunshine Coast Health Service and other external clients relating to Haematology, Transfusion, Chemical Pathology, Microbiology Microscopy, Phlebotomy and Specimen Reception.

You will actively participate in the multidisciplinary team, which includes but is not limited to: attending team meetings, supporting junior staff, assisting with documentation, participating in educational activities, ensuring mandatory competencies are current, assisting and supporting supervisory staff.

Key competencies (role specific criteria)

You will be assessed on your ability to demonstrate the following key capabilities, knowledge and experience. Within the context of the responsibilities described above under your key responsibilities', the ideal applicant will be someone who can demonstrate the following:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills in performing analytical and technical aspects of common analysis including scientific interpretation in a multi discipline laboratory.
  • Ability to work accurately and effectively in a multidisciplinary laboratory team with minimum supervision, including a demonstrated ability to plan and prioritise workloads according to clinical requirements and a demonstrated ability to work independently towards logical solution of scientific and technical problems.
  • Effective interpersonal skills including the ability to work within a multidiscipline laboratory team the ability to communicate accurately and concisely in either written or oral forms. with customers, patients and with members of staff.
  • Demonstrate ability (or ability to acquire the skill) to identify, develop and implement quality and service improvement activities in accordance with NATA/ ISO accreditation / certification.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a responsible and efficient manner without supervision.
  • Ability to participate in a multi-discipline team.
  • Demonstrated experience in the use of a Laboratory Information System such as AUSLAB.
  • Posses or develop skills in Specimen Reception as to be able to accept, validate and register specimens appropriately and to refer specimens to supporting laboratories
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to quality and service improvement activities in accordance with National Association of Testing Authority/International Standardisation Organisation (NATA/ISO) accreditation / certification.
  • Awareness of procedures policies and regulations which impact on the position such as the Queensland Health Code of Conduct, Work place Health and Safety, Equal Employment Opportunity and Anti-discrimination.

Qualifications, registrations and other requirements

  • The successful applicant must at least hold a relevant recognised tertiary degree (or equivalent) qualification in Medical Laboratory Science.
  • This position provides a 24-hour 7 day service to Gympie Hospital. The successful applicant must participate in rostered day, evening and weekend shifts.
  • There is also a requirement to participate in the overnight on-call roster, during which time they must be able to be on site within half an hour when called (this thirty minutes is inclusive of both time to get ready and time to drive to the hospital).
  • While not mandatory, multidisciplinary experience would be well regarded.
  • Appointment to this position requires proof of qualification. Certified copies of the required information must be provided to the appropriate supervisor/ manager, prior to the commencement of clinical duties.
